Jurassic World 2: A Dramatic New Direction

Jurassic World was in many ways a throwback to the style of the original trilogy made by Stephen Spielberg, from mirrored plotlines, to bringing back original characters such as BD Wong to link the storylines. In many respects, the movie brought forth an almost silly air with Chris Pratt’s sense of humor, Bryce Dallas Howard’s amusing ability to run around in white stilettos for the majority of the movie, and cameos by celebrities such as Jimmy Buffett.

All of that is coming to an end it appears, with Colin Trevorrow, who directed Jurassic World, saying in a 2015 interview on Jurassic Cast Podcast that the sequel would be "more suspenseful and scary." That quote was soon followed up by the announcement that Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage, Penny Dreadful) would be taking over as director, with Trevorrow moving back to an executive producer role alongside Stephen Spielberg. Bayona, who is best known in the U.S. for The Orphanage, has a storied history in his native Spain as a serial horror and suspense director, often taking movies into the psychological and supernatural realms.

Another development that leaves Jurassic World fans continuing to guess on the direction of the movie is the announcement on March 5th via the official Jurassic 2 website that Geraldine Chaplin (Doctor Zhivago, A Monster Calls), who also starred in The Orphanage, would also be joining the cast. Given the roles that Chaplin has taken during her lengthy career, it is likely that she will bring a much darker twist to the narrative, like so many of her previous roles. How her role will be integrated with Pratt and Howard is still a bit of a mystery, but has the makings of a very new direction for the Jurassic Park series.

Jurassic World 2 is set to premiere on June 22, 2018.
