Quentin Tarantino’s newest movie has locked up a star. According to Deadline, DiCaprio has agreed to star in Tarantino’s ninth film, which is based around the year 1969 and the serial killer Charles Manson. Deadline previously reported that Tarantino wants to get Margot Robbie to play Sharon Tate, who was an actress brutally murdered in the summer of 1969. DiCaprio and Robbie previously starred in Martin Scorcese’s The Wolf of Wall Street.
DiCaprio worked with Tarantino in 2012’s Django Unchained, playing Calvin Candie, a slave and plantation owner and of course the main villain in the film. DiCaprio’s last movie was 2015’s The Revenant, which he won an Oscar for.
Multiple reports have stated Tarantino wants Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise to also take roles in the unnamed film set to release on the 50th anniversary of Sharon Tate’s murder. Pitt worked with the director on 2009’s Inglourious Basterds, but Cruise has not been in any of Tarantino’s first eight features. Tarantino’s movies have certainly shown they can handle multiple A-list stars without issue, and adding Pitt, Cruise, and Robbie would certainly help build some deafining hype when it’s released in a couple summers.
The exact plot of the film is still unkown, though it might be a lot like Inglourious Basterds, where the film is based off real historical events but goes in its own direction while introducing non-historical characters and mixing them with real-life characters.
Tarantino’s unnamed movie will be distributed by Sony, who won the bidding. This will be Tarantino’s first film not with the Weinstein Company as a result of the Harvey Weinstein situation.
August 9, 2019 is the expected release date for the film.
