What’s Up With Luke In ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’?

Yesterday, Disney released another Star Wars: The Last Jedi teaser trailer, titled “Awake”. It’s a 45-second television spot, and please be advised: it does do a bit of teasing, and we’ll speculate on it.

 

 

Luke in the Millennium Falcon is a sight to behold, as he hadn’t been in there in quite some time. It was the perfect amount of teasing, as we don’t know exactly what he’s doing in there. That shot alone should get people excited about the movie.

 

Later in the teaser, we get another look at Chewbacca and the porg. Disney seems to be (smartly) using the porg to promote The Last Jedi, and those little fellas will quickly become crowd favorites. As I’ve written before, Disney can sell loads of porg merchandise and the kids will love it.

 

The end of the teaser is the most telling part, with Rey and Luke appearing set to do battle. The immediate reaction is that one of the two are on the dark side, but there is also a simple explanation for this.

 

If you think about it, Luke is almost certainly training Rey to start the film. Rey might’ve just become frustrated with the training at a certain point and had enough, wanting to show Luke what she can do. Luke himself became frustrated years ago with both Obi-Wan and Yoda. But, Luke never pulled his saber on either of them the way Rey does in this teaser.

 

The beloved Luke became perhaps the greatest force of good in the Galaxy, so it’d be quite the stab in the back if he went to the dark side. “This is not going to go the way you think,” the legendary Jedi warned while seemingly in a position of weakness on the ground. The now-old Jedi obviously has some left in the tank.

 

And there’s been speculation for a while now that Rey could be swayed to the dark side. I don’t see it, but anything is possible.

 

Of course, the teaser could be all misdirection—it could have been cut so that it appears Rey and Luke are in serious conflict when it’s actually taking parts from different scenes and putting them together.

 

Still, I have a bad feeling about this…
