2017 Heisman Watch (Week 1)

Georgia Tech and Tennessee still play tonight to end the opening full weekend of college football, but every Monday there will be Heisman rankings—starting today. After some crazy action, including a 34-point comeback by UCLA last night, here are the Heisman favorites after one week.

1. Saquon Barkley | Penn State RB | Junior

It was against Akron, but Saquon Barkley looked just like the superstar that he is in the opening game of the season for Penn State. Barkley only needed 14 carries to amass 172 yards and two touchdowns, and he also added three receptions for 54 yards through the air.

2. Josh Rosen | UCLA QB | Junior

Josh Rosen led one of the greatest comebacks you will see in the history of sports last night against Texas A&M. As he said after the game, it wasn’t the start they anticipated when they fell behind 44-10, but the Bruins came through in the second half. In the fourth quarter, Rosen played with ice in his veins, throwing for 292 yards and four touchdowns. Those are great stats in a game, let alone a quarter with the pressure on to score every time you touch the ball.

3. Lamar Jackson | Louisville QB | Junior

The reigning Heisman Trophy winner looked excellent in his season debut against Purdue. He completed 65.2% of his passes (30/46) for 378 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 107 yards on the ground. Jackson threw the ball accurately and was clutch down the stretch for the Cardinals. He’s going to put up video game numbers all year.

4. Baker Mayfield | Oklahoma QB | Senior

It’s hard to be more efficient than Baker Mayfield was on Saturday. Against UTEP, Oklahoma’s signal-caller was 19/20 for 329 yards and three touchdowns. Mayfield is totally locked in, but he has a huge test coming up this Saturday night in Columbus against Ohio State. He could make a Heisman statement in that game.

5. Mason Rudolph | Oklahoma State QB | Senior

While it might not have been quite as efficient as Mayfield, Mason Rudolph was just fine against Tulsa, going 20/24 for 303 yards and three touchdowns. Oklahoma State’s senior quarterback will look to stay sharp and put up some big numbers on Friday night versus South Alabama.
