The Lions re-signed running back Zach Zenner.
The undrafted free agent from 2015 will return for his fourth season with the Lions, and perhaps he'll be able to carve out a big role with the new coaching staff. He's someone to keep an eye on during the preseason if Detroit doesn't add much more to the backfield this offseason.
Zach Zenner handles just one touch in loss to Baltimore.
It was a four-yard carry. Zenner was expected to have a larger workload with Ameer Abdullah out, but undrafted rookie Tion Green led the backfield with 11 carries for 51 yards and a touchdown. Zenner should be on the waiver wire.
Zach Zenner scores in Week 5 loss.
Zenner rushed three times for 11 yards, including a one-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, but was stopped for a loss on a fourth-down-conversion attempt in the second half. We've liked Zenner as a player since he came out of small school South Dakota State, and he's done well when he gets a chance. Still, he's not a fantasy option.
Zach Zenner rushed four times for eight yards in the Lions' second preseason game.
Zenner notably played ahead of Dwayne Washington with the first-team offense, spelling starter Ameer Abdullah. The highlight was a nine-yard run that the 25-year-old bounced to the outside. Zenner is a nice player and should have a change-of-pace role in the regular season, but he probably won't be a fantasy factor with Abdullah and Theo Riddick healthy.
Zach Zenner carries six times for 26 yards in preseason game against Indy.
He also had one reception for three yards. Zenner appears in the lead to get the most carries behind Ameer Abdullah, but Dwayne Washington is also in the mix.
Jim Caldwell sees "consistent progress and improvement" with Zach Zenner.
Caldwell talked up Zenner's ability to contribute a variety of ways on offense (running the ball, pass blocking, and catching out of the backfield), including the ability to contribute on special teams. The Lions head coach said he doesn't "anybody has any question" that Zenner can run the ball and has progressed. The big third-year back says he's getting more comfortable as he enters another year in the NFL. Ameer Abdullah will be the lead back, and Theo Riddick will have a big role on passing downs, but Zenner, thanks in part to his special teams contributions, looks like he could lock up the number three running back job.
Zach Zenner totals 17 touches in playoff loss to Seattle.
Zenner had 11 carries for 34 yards and six receptions for 54 yards versus the Seahawks. The Lions' run game struggled this season, and Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick should both be 100% for next season, so Zenner likely won't be working as a lead back, but should have a spot on Detroit's roster.
Zach Zenner rushed 20 times for 69 yards and one touchdown in Sunday night's loss to the Packers.
He also caught four passes for 41 yards. Zenner has been a nice surprise for a Detroit team that needs to establish a running game heading into the postseason. Zenner finishes the regular season with 334 yards on 88 carries (3.8 YPC) and four touchdowns. The young back will be relied on this weekend against Seattle.
Zach Zenner scores twice on MNF.
Zenner rushed 12 times for 67 yards and two touchdowns, adding two catches for 25 yards in the loss to Dallas. Detroit and Zenner started hot, as the second-year back did almost all his damage in the early part of the game. Curiously, the Lions decided to not feed him in the second half after his very impressive first half, and it changed the game. Zenner should remain the between-the-tackles runner in the NFC (North) championship next Sunday night whether or not Theo Riddick (wrist) returns.
Zach Zenner loses fumble in the end zone against the Giants.
Zenner rushed three times for 12 yards and caught four passes for 52 yards in the 17-6 loss in New York. The fumble was big because it was the Lions best chance at scoring a touchdown, as they were deep in the red zone. Still, Zenner has shown some good skills and is a name to look at in dynasty leagues; he can stay on the waiver wire in standard leagues.
Zach Zenner rushed seven times for 36 yards before leaving Sunday's win with a concussion.
He also caught two passes for nine yards. Zenner has been pretty good in limited action this season, but this concussion opens up an opportunity for Dwayne Washington to takeover the between-the-tackles role behind Theo Riddick. Zenner doesn't need to be owned in fantasy leagues.
