Tiger Woods And Phil Mickelson Might Do A Winner-Take-All Golf Superfight For $10 Million

A superfight could be coming to Las Vegas, but it’s not in the sport you might think. According to GOLF.com, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are planning a $10 million winner-take-all match-play event. The two legendary golfers nearly had this set up for July 3, the day before Independence Day, but Mickelson says it didn’t come together and they are “working on a different date.”

 

GOLF.com says the idea came about during a practice round that Woods and Mickelson played together at this year’s Masters. Then later at the Players’ Championship, Woods and Mickelson were paired together.

 

At this year’s Players, a month after the Masters, Wood[s] and Mickelson were paired together and Phil said, “The excitement that’s been going on around here, it gets me thinking: Why don’t we just bypass all the ancillary stuff of a tournament and just go head-to-head and just have kind of a high-stakes, winner-take-all match. Now, I don’t know if he wants a piece of me, but I just think it would be something that would be really fun for us to do, and I think there would be a lot of interest in it if we just went straight to the final round.”

 

As a part of the primetime television event, both golfers would be mic’d up, allowing the viewers to hear things they otherwise would not hear during a tournament on the PGA Tour. Also, because it’d be one round with a lot on the line, it would give everyone a final-round feel for the entire 18 holes—as long as neither one of them jumps too far ahead.

 

Woods and Mickelson are two of the richest athletes of all-time, with net worths in the hundreds of millions; so, $10 million might not seem like that much to them. But $10 million is still a lot of money, and they’d both be trying very hard to win. Both would almost certainly get a cut of the revenue and sponsorship dollars from the event in addition to the $10 million for the winner, so there’s really no downside to participating.

 

Also, doing this event on their own gives Woods and Mickelson control. Not that they aren’t handsomely paid on the Tour, which they certainly are, but the two of them could do the event once or twice a year if they want.

 

A golf superfight might not ever reach the level of a world-class boxing match, but you can’t blame Woods and Mickelson for giving this a shot.
